Located in the heart of the Lehigh Valley and along the shores of the Lehigh River, the city of Lehighton, PA, is surrounded by beautiful state parks, lakes, nature reserves, and fantastic natural landmarks that make it a great base to go on day trips and explore the region. If you are looking for nearby destinations to explore in your new 2022 Ford Bronco, these are three spots you should check out.

1. Beltzville State Park

Spanning a little over 3,000 acres of territory, Beltzville State Park is a well-known weekend destination among residents of Lehighton and other nearby towns. Established in 1972 and managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, this state park is located along the shores of Beltzville Lake and offers excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, picnicking, and other outdoor activities.

Open year-round between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, Beltzville State Park can be reached in about 10 minutes by car from downtown Lehighton, making it an excellent destination to spend a day away from the routine. Unlike other nearby nature reserves, Beltzville State Park does not close during the winter months, when it becomes one of the go-to destinations for ice fishing, ice boating, and cross-country skiing.

2. Hickory Run State Park

Established in 1945 and located less than 25 miles north of Lehighton, Hickory Run State Park is another sprawling nature reserve where groups of friends and families from all over southern Pennsylvania come to spend some time away from the city. Spanning an area of about 16,000 acres, this state park boasts a large network of trails, making it a well-known destination for hiking and mountain biking.

Getting from downtown Lehighton to Hickory Run State Park takes about half an hour by car, driving along route I-476. Once you make your way here, some of the spots you should check out include Hawk Falls, the Fireline Trail, and the Lehigh Gorge Trail along the western banks of the river. This nature reserve is home to large populations of white-tailed deer, black bears, and squirrels.

3. Mauch Chunk Lake Park

A picturesque lakeside park that welcomes thousands of visitors during the summer season, Mauch Chunk Lake Park is a place where you can spend an entire weekend swimming and sunbathing with your family or a group of friends. Located about 8 miles west of downtown Lehighton, this park can be reached in about 15 minutes by car along routes US-209 and Lentz Trail.
